A computer chip-sized laboratory

Blue4Green introduces the Lab-on-a-chip: a commercial first in veterinary diagnostics.

 The young company Blue4Green from Twente (The Netherlands) has began to commercially market a laboratory the size of a computer chip. This Lab-on-a-chip enables veterinary professionals to test animal blood or urine in the stable or pasture and make a reliable diagnosis within minutes with the use of a handheld 'labbook'.

 The chip is ready to use and measures the concentration of a number of minerals in blood or urine with capillary electrophoresis, making it the first of its kind. The measurements can be retrieved and stored with the 'labbook'.

The innovation is the result of years of research by the Lab-on-a-chip Group of the Twente University and  part of the MESA+ Institute for nanotechnology, and was developed in close cooperation with Medimate B.V.

 The Lab-on-chip contributes to transparency in the food chain, better animal well-being, reduction of medication and a lower risk of contamination.

 Veterinary collective De Graafschap in the Netherlands will start applying the Lab-on-a-chip in the near future.

Blue4Green is gekozen uit 553 ideeën voor duurzame innovaties

Uit een record aantal van 553 ideeën voor duurzame innovaties is  Blue4Green gekozen tot een van de tien genomineerden voor de Herman Wijffels Innovatieprijs 2009.

De nieuwe Lab-on-a-Chip technologie maakt het `Blue4Green mogelijk om binnen twee minuten op locatie een diagnose te stellen bij dieren. De dierenarts kan in de stal, wei of lab een snelle en betrouwbare meting van bloed of urine afnemen, met behulp van een speciale chip en handheld labbook.

Veterinaire diagnostiek - zoals Blue4Green gaat exploiteren - staat internationaal hoog op de politieke en veterinaire agenda’s. Transparantie in de voedselketen, beter dierenwelzijn, reductie van medicijngebruik en risicovermindering op verspreiding van ziekten is van groot belang voor mens en dier. De nieuw technologie maakt de Blue4Green duurzame innovatie  mogelijk.

Het nog jonge bedrijf Blue4Green heeft de nieuwe technologie ontwikkeld samen met de leerstoel BIOS- Lab-on-a-chip Group aan de Universiteit Twente onderdeel van het MESA+ instituut.

Op woensdag 2 december reiken Herman Wijffels en Piet Moerland de Herman Wijffels Innovatieprijs 2009 uit.
